The Monatuk Point, NY lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State. General George Washington reportedly commissioned the building of the lighthouse in 1792. Washington later stated that its fortress-like construction would last 200 years—it has been 210 years and counting since he made that statement. The lighthouse has the distinction of being the first “Statue of Liberty”, because before the Statue of Liberty was built, the Monatuk Point lighthouse was the first landmark that early generations of immigrants would see when coming to America. The lighthouse received the distinctive beige band around its middle in 1908, which is also how our model is painted.
